Cannot open "Documents and Settings" folder
Seems like the Explorer tree no longer matches what I see in a cmd window for some reason, furthermore several of the folders I see in Explorer are inaccessible. Namely "Documents and Settings", which I do not see in a cmd window. Is there some guide as to how all of this is laid out and why I cannot enter certain folders despite using an administrative user? This is a clean install on an empty partition that happens to be letter F: instead of C:.+

Hi,Documents and Settings in both Vista and Windows 7 is not a real folder. It is a junction and used to interface Windows 7 with legacy programs. Windows 7 usesC:\Users\<your user name>\ to contain your files.

I got the same question. The shortcut "Documents and Settings" seems useless, when I try to access/delete it. It said I don't have the authority to use it, event I am an administrator on the computer.

Hi YegolevLike Lead3 said this folder is onlythere for legacy installation programs that were designed to install on a system such as XP. These programs may be hard coded to look for a 'Documents and Settings' folder. The new name and location for that folder in Windows 7 is C:\Users.When one of these older programs is installed that Junction will redirect all of the installation files to the new location. Please do not try to remove or change these folders. Doing so could cause some program installations to fail.Hope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP
